In 1605, the Irish Tercio was raised to serve in the Spanish Army of Flanders. This study describes the circumstances –military and diplomatic– that made feasible the creation of this unit. In 1620, it was considered one of the most battle-hardened Tercios serving the Spanish Monarchy in the Catholic Low Countries. Este estudio describe las circunstancias –militares y diplomáticas– que hicieron posible la creación de esta unidad que, a la altura de 1620, se consideraba como una de las más veteranas de las que servían a la Monarquía Hispánica en los Países Bajos católicos. Además, se presentará un detallado análisis de las compañías que formaron el tercio, cómo fueron reclutadas, y del número de soldados y oficiales que sirvieron en él durante aquellos quince años.
