Over the years, higher education researchers have examined the factors that influence or enhance academic achievement and factors that prevent students from dropout. In the early days the emphasis was on effects from student variables such as ability and socio-economic status. En los primeros días, el énfasis estaba en los efectos de las variables de los estudiantes, como la capacidad y el estado socioeconómico. Más recientemente, influidas por la investigación sobre la eficacia escolar, se han incluido en los análisis variables relacionadas con el sistema educativo y la forma en que las instituciones organizan su educación.
