Towns and trade centers of the Gold and Slave Coasts ; The Gold Coast and the Slave Coast were the most intensively exploited parts of the African seaboard. Here Europeans built fortified castle-warehouses to protect their chests of gold and stocks of textiles from plunder and to serve as warehouses, cantoments, slave-pens, and well-appointed residences for European governors.
