Construction of receding lines

From a treatise on perspective by Abraham Bosse, 1684. X-Z is the horizon, C is the central vanishing point, and the loose ends of the string are used for construction. Jan Vermeer would have been familiar with the principles of perspective described in manuals such as this. Vermeer's 'Art of Painting' shows evidence of his use of the vanishing point in the central perspective.
