Hendrickje Stoffels (?)

Inscribed at right (in a later hand): Rembrandt / f 1660. The sitter is probably Hendrickje Stoffels (born about 1625/26, died 1663), who was the painter's companion from about 1650 until her early death in 1663. Rembrandt's responsibility for this portrait has never been doubted, although the signature and date appear to have been added by another hand. The picture may have been painted at different intervals in the years about 1655-60, and it may be unfinished in the drapery and hand.
