Due to the town’s proximity to the frontline, the Allied Field Ambulances, Y.M.C.A. and fighting units used the local churchyard, especially in the early days, to treat the wounded. In April 1918, after a long period of fighting, the Germans launched a concentrated infantry attack which forced entry into southern Nieuwkerke. Eventually the British retook the area, during which they captured seventeen German infantrymen who were inside the local Y.M.C.A hut.
