During the last century, five mammal species were introduced into Belgium. One of them, the wild sheep, was introduced by hunters. Illicite releases are responsable of the presence of the coypu in many localities and the Siberian chipmunk in the vicinity of Brussels. The muskrat, widespread all over the country, the raccoon and some coypus are invaders from rearing facilities. Population reinforcements of game species (brown hare, red deer, wild boar.) are still frequent and are made without any control measures.
