Bench seat, 1918

Bench seat on display in the Belgium Exhibit at the Allied War Exposition, possibly in Waco, Texas, in 1918. Label reads: "This bench seat was from Scharbeck Station, Brussels, as marked, was carried by the Germans on the eastern front. It was found by Belgium troops in Kocova Station, Galicia. Austrian front, on August 14, 1916, after capture of the village by them, along with the village troops. Through a counterattack by the enemy the bench had to be momentarily abandoned, but a Belgium night patrol party succeeded in recapturing the humble article of the native land.
