From the stater to the aureus. The case of the Belgium ; Du statère à l’aureus. L’exemple du Belgium

International audience ; In the 1990s, various authors have put forward the hypothesis that the circulation of gold staters in Gaul could have favoured the introduction of the aureus in the newly conquered province. This paper explores possible continuities in coined gold uses in Gaul, focusing on ancient Belgium (north-western Gaul). Thanks to the combination of die studies, metal composition analyses and insights given by archaeological contexts, we now have for this region a much clearer vision of gold coin production and circulation between 50 BC and the beginning of the 1st c.
