Environmental education comprises the promotion of citizenship attitudes aimed at the preservation and conservation of the environment, through the provision of legal knowledge and information that will enable the citizen to take proactive actions with the Government. The objective was to evaluate, through a questionnaire, the environmental perception and legal knowledge of the citizens residing around the Cedro Walloon, which receives untreated sanitary sewage and flows directly to the Muriaé River. The Discomfort Index was calculated and used to determine the degree of olfactory discomfort perceived by citizens in the walloon area. Was found the value of 78.73, equivalent to a very offensive odor, corroborating the common reports of local residents that the walloon emanations are offensive. There is among citizens a significant degree of ignorance about environmental legislation and legal mechanisms for denouncing environmental crimes and about the existence and function of certain environmental agencies. ; La educación ambiental contempla la promoción de actitudes de ciudadanía dirigidas a la preservación y conservación del medio ambiente, a través del suministro de conocimientos legales e informaciones que capaciten al ciudadano en la toma de acciones propositivas ante el Poder Público. Se buscó evaluar, a través de cuestionario, la percepción ambiental y los conocimientos legales de los ciudadanos del barrio Gobernador Roberto Silveira, en el entorno del Valão do Cedro, que recibe el agotamiento sanitario no tratado y afluye directamente al Río Muriaé. El Índice de Incómodo fue calculado y usado para determinar el grado de incomodidad olfativa percibido por los ciudadanos en el área del valón.
