Such are the two main questions discussed in this paper which tries to give an answer by a progress in five steps : thinking about the choice of indicators, thinking about the choice of the spatial scale, making or not a distinction between industrial hranchs or types, integreting or not the temporal changes, testing a typology. Through all the images that have been produced, the relativity of the points of view as well as their partial approach of the studying phenomenon are showed, which indicates that both « prudence » and « modesty » are necessary in all researchs trying to analyse the structures of the territories. ; Comment appréhender la distribution des industries dans une région ? Comment en analyser sa répartition ? Telles sont les deux questions majeures auxquelles l'article tente de répondre en proposant un cheminement en cinq temps : réflexion sur le choix des indicateurs, réflexion sur le choix de l'échelle d'analyse, prise en compte ou non des branches et sous-secteurs, prise en compte ou non des dynamiques temporelles, essai de typologie. A travers toutes les images produites, tout montre la relativité des points de vue ainsi que leur approche partielle du phénomène étudié ce qui incite à beaucoup de prudence et de modestie dans toute démarche pour rendre intelligible les territoires.
