The 4,500-hectare Namalok estate in north-eastern Tanzania has been protected as a private fauna and flora reserve by a private sugar company, TPCLimited. The local vegetation is Salvadora persica tree savannah with copses of Suaeda monoica and some more or less dense tree savannah with Acacia xanthophloea, Faidherbia albida and Acacia tortilis. For management purposes following the reintroduction of large herbivores, their access to the wooded formations was mapped and a study was made of the floristic composition of the wooded areas using the Perpendicular Vegetation Index (PVI). The results show a very high correlation between the calculated density of the woody vegetation and the PVI (r2 = 0.96) and confirm the validity of the proposed approach based on analyses of satellite imagery. For more local purposes, our results also show that, concerning floristic composition, the successive density levels mapped are made up of 70 different plant species belonging to the range of pantropical flora. These savannah formations also show a fairly even distribution of highly diverse species, with very similar species frequencies. The different types of tree savannah cover 38 % of the area of the estate. In increasing order of density, savannah areas with less than 100 trees/ha cover 836 ha, those with 100 - 200 trees/ha cover 654 ha, while those with densities of 200 - 300 trees/ha are fairly small and occupy only 206 ha.
