Análisis comparativo de la pérdida de suelo de la Cuenca Alta de la Presa de Sabana Yegua, usando sistema de información geográfica (SIG) y métodos directos

This study intends to compare the results of erosion measurement on fixed parcels (direct method), with the estimatation of potential erosion using Geographical Information System tools (GIS ) through the implementation of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Evaluation formula ( with the acronym RUSLE). The area of study covers the area of the SabanaYegua Watershed, at Dominican Republic, with an area of 166,746 hectares, and covers a wide range of different biophysical and environmental conditions, which show an example of the Natural Renewable Resources degradation processes, due to human interv... This study intends to compare the results of erosion measurement on fixed parcels (direct method), with the estimatation of potential erosion using Geographical Information System tools (GIS ) through the implementation of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Evaluation formula ( with the acronym RUSLE). The area of study covers the area of the SabanaYegua Watershed, at Dominican Republic, with an area of 166,746 hectares, and covers a wide range of different biophysical and environmental conditions, which show an example of the Natural Renewable Resources degradation processes, due to human intervention that feeds its deterioration. For this reason, tools are required in order to predict spatially and temporally the current condition of soil degradation. Regarding the soil loss spatial analysis, a model has been developed, in which the different layers (RUSLE) elaborated with basic information available for the watershed and the country have been integrated. Statistical data were obtained from permanent parcels related to the Sabana Yegua Watershed Sustainable Soil Management Project, led by Sur Futuro Foundation. For each location plot, the soil loss values have been calculated in Ton/Ha/Year and compared to the results of parcel measurements, supplemented by verification visits on different parts of the watershed. The results showed that given the methodology used, the accuracy of spatial sources, timing and distribution of the measurements cannot be compared statistically. But predictions of erosion for the watershed using RUSLE/GIS are acceptable ranges and within the average of other similar studies in the country, under similar conditions.
