Printed atlases of the modern era, made strictly in line with contemporary tastes, offer those who consider them retrospectively valuable information on the socio-cultural interests and aspirations of their previous owners. In this spirit, the essay presents a new interpretation of the coloring of the images of the introductory copy of Theatrum Sabaudiae (Amsterdam, Blaeu, 1682; Turin, Royal Library, Rare IV 3/1-2) offered by the heirs of Joan Blaeu to Vittorio Amadeo II (1666-1732; Duke of Savoy from 1675 to 1730, King of Sicily between 1713 and 1720 and King of Sardinia from 1720). Through the analysis of stylistic aspects, with particular emphasis on the political importance of the exceptional artistic treatment for the duke who dreamed of the royal crown, it is intended to attribute the coloring of the atlas to the Dutch master-colourist Dirk Jansz. van Santen. In the political culture of the time, the symbolic meaning of the atlas corresponded, in fact, to a precise material value: by commissioning both the binding and the coloring of the copy in question to well-known experts, the Blaeu therefore effectively responded to the need of the Savoy dynasty to assert their territorial claims, accompanied by the growing prestige of the court, thanks to subtle strategies aimed at acquiring power, which are also reflected in the field of book collecting.
