Good quality registries are crucial because they provide insight into quality of care and opportunities for improvement. The NVU started in 2008 with the prostate cancer registry, in which data is recorded by healthcare professionals. The Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR) also records data on prostate cancer since 1989. Data are recorded by data managers from the the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organisation (IKNL) after consulting medical files. In 2015, IKNL started ProZIB (ProstaatkankerZorg In Beeld) in collaboration with the NVU and other medical scientific associations. Based on the ProZIB-results, the NCR prostate cancer dataset has been expanded and is suitable for continuous quality monitoring. As part of ProZIB, the NVU registry has been compared with the NKR in terms of completeness (i.e. number of radical prostatectomies) and content. This comparison showed that the NKR was more complete (94% versus 62–85%). The contents of the registrations largely corresponded. The advantages of quality registration in the NCR are: independence, uniformity and reduced registration burden for healthcare professional with consistent quality of content.
