Ethiopian Chief

The 1896 defeat of the Italians by Abyssinian Emperor Menelek II at Adowa in northern Ethiopia provided Day with the inspiration for a series of heroic figure studies entitled Menelek, Nubia, and variations of An Ethiopian. The exotically costumed and appointed model for these pictures was J. Alexandre Skeete, a strikingly handsome artist's model and aspiring artist.
