Self-portrait

This painting is an example of early portraiture from the young van Dyck, who had just turned 20. In spite of his youthful appearance, the artist seems to be keenly aware of the importance of a suitable air. Descriptions from the period tell of his agreeable, rather noble bearing as well as his elegant attire. The gold chain, a gift from the Duke Fernando Gonzaga, was added when van Dyck worked over and enlarged the painting.
