Entombment

Rubens' oil sketch is a free version of Caravaggio's "Entombment", c. 1604 (Vatican, Pinacoteca), an altarpiece in one of the chapels of the Chiesa Nuova (Santa Maria in Vallicella), which the younger artist would have seen while he worked on the high altar there. This sketch was painted from memory some years after Rubens returned to his native Antwerp, in 1608.
