Elevated levels of homocysteine are a risk factor for vascular disease, thrombosis, neural tube defects and dementia. The 677C > T polymorphism in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene appears to be the most important single determinant of plasma homocysteine concentration.
