A first mathematics curriculum: Stevin’s Instruction for engineers (1600).

The oldest known plan for a mathematics course, written in Dutch, is the Instruction by Simon Stevin, dating from 9 January 1600. It is remarkable because of the detailed specification of aims, content, teaching methods, learning activities, materials and teaching language. The Instruction was written for the Engineering Course, which was attached to the University of Leideni in 1600, on request of Prince Maurice (1567-1625), commander of the Dutch army.
