The present research developed within the framework of Psycholinguistics and Bilingual First Language Acquisition (BFLA) investigates the development of metalinguistic awareness in early bilingualism and in the simultaneous bilingual acquisition of Portuguese and Dutch, based on a case study of a child, aged 2; 4 to 3 years old. Starting from the premise that children who acquire two languages at the same time develop two linguistic systems from the very beginning, we aim to find out to what extent the child under study develops a metalinguistic awareness that allows him to distinguish the contexts of use of the languages being acquired. The results suggest that the child is able to distinguish the two languages and does not confuse them. We consider that the choice of mostly appropriate language, as well as the other manifestations of metalinguistic activity identified in the corpus, show that the child has a metalinguistic awareness regarding the contextualized use of the two languages. The data also indicate that the distinction (or not) between languages and the respective contexts of use cannot be interpreted only as the presence, or absence, of a metalinguistic awareness regarding the distinct use of the two languages.
