Resting Cow

This sculpture was mentioned in a sale in Paris in 1814, where it was said to have been modelled by the painter Adriaen Van de Velde (1636-72). It can be compared with similar statuettes (a bull in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, for example) mentioned in inventories of 17th century Flemish painters or seen in paintings of artists' studios at this period.
