European empires and trade ; In the 17th and 18th centuries the countries of northwest Europe were at the center of an expanding world economy, often able to trade on terms that were heavily in their favor. In many of the colonized parts of the Americas and Asia the production of a narrow range of primary products for export markets was encouraged, thus planting the seeds of future economic dependency and backwardness.
