Lottery Card for the Amsterdam Dolhuis (madhouse)

In the summer of 1592, on 14 August, a lottery was organized in Amsterdam on behalf of the 'lunatic poor of the city of Amsterdam', as the header on this print announces. The proceeds of the lottery were intended for the construction of a new wing of the 'Dolhuis', the madhouse where the city's mentally ill lived. The building is depicted at the top of the print, with the new wing on the left. Beneath it are the prizes that ticket holders could win, ranging from expensive cups, goblets and spoons to cash. Top left is the coat of arms of Holland and top right that of Amsterdam.
