Old Woman Cutting Her Nails
Once well known as a Rembrandt, this painting has been attributed alternately to Nicolaes Maes and to Karel van der Pluym by a few scholars between the 1920s and the 1980s. It has been suggested by Walter Liedtke, curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, that the painting may be by a close associate of Maes, Abraham van Dijck (c. 1635?-1680?). Hubert von Sonnenburg, conservator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, disagrees with this attribution, and proposes to exhibit it as a follower of Rembrandt (Nicolaes Maes?).
