State Formation and Criminal Justice in Early Modern Europe: How Exceptional was the Dutch Model?

This brief essay discusses the interplay of criminal justice and state formation processes in early modern Europe. The difference in trajectories of State-formation is its guiding theme. A major question is whether the road taken by the Dutch Republic was fundamentally different from what happened in the rest of Europe. This is the view of Robert Muchembled, put forward in particular in his book Le temps des supplices (1992). Consequently, I will present my own views in a critical dialogue wi.
