In a 1940 manuscript for a pamphlet of notes on the Rhinebeck murals compiled for Olin Dows by Ms. Helen Myers it is noted that Hyde Park's first hotel was built ca 1790 and stood at the intersection of Market Street and the Albany Post Road (presently Rt. 9). At Myers' suggestion, Dows adorned the "Hyde Park Hotel" with an image of Samuel Bard's "Red House" to make "Dr. Bard's temper more understandable." (note from Myers to Dows dated "Tuesday evening," Container 6, Folder 5 in the Papers of Olin Dows, FDR Library). Mural commissioned for Hyde Park, NY post office by WPA Section of Fine Arts Art in Public Buildings Program, photographed by C.B. Ross and Edward Campeau.
