In response to this general stream degradation, many restoration projects were carried out over the past decades to improve stream habitat quality, but often leading to no ecological improvement. In 2010 and 2011, Dutch waterboards undertook innovative restoration measures encompassing reshaping the stream bed to make it less wide and deep, flattening the banks' slope and creating meanders. To assess the impact of these measures, macrophyte communities of restored and unrestored reaches of three streams were compared. After two years, plant diversity showed an increase in the stream edges of restored sections, but not in the channel. Growth forms responded differently to restoration, according to their habitat requirements. Moreover, the results suggest that this increased plant diversity might be more linked to the creation of more suitable habitats (i.e. shallower and narrower streams) than to the creation of meanders. ; Du fait de nombreux aménagements et du développement intensif de l'agriculture et de l'urbanisation, 96% des cours d'eau néerlandais sont aujourd'hui directement impactés par les activités humaines, affectant ainsi le biote aquatique. En réponse à cette dégradation, de nombreux projets de restauration ont été réalisés au cours des dernières décennies dans le but d'améliorer la qualité des habitats des cours d'eau, mais peu d'entre eux ont abouti à des communautés plus diverses.
