Rembrandt van Rijn was renowned as one of the most talented Dutch painter of his time and his artistic development and distinct style are revealed in the eighty-plus self-portraits that he produced throughout his life. This particular painting is the last self-portrait he ever created and was painted in 1669, the year he died at the age of sixty-three. An excellent example of Rembrandt’s late style, this work demonstrates the artist’s experimental approach in which he employed broad, loose brushstrokes in some areas (such as the forehead and hat) and a more exact and detailed approach in others (evident in the portrayal of the artist’s luminous eyes). His experimental style and skillful manipulation of shading and highlighting result in a lively figure, and Rembrandt is able to convey his personality as well as physical appearance to the viewer.
