Les constituants et les propriétés lithologiques des polders marins de la région de Furnes (Belgique)

“The Belgian institute for Scientific Research in Industry and Agriculture” presently subsidizes the realization of the pedological map of Belgium. The pedological map of the sea-polders area of Furnes is already finished, and with it every determination of laboratory which were juged necessary to characterize the various pedological types of the area.As a pedological type is determinated by its properties at a depth of 1,50 m, it becomes evident that the above mentioned study allows us to enlarge considerably our knowledge of recent sea sediments, such as the polderland.According to variations of the compositions and properties of the upper layer (from 0 to 150 cm) of the polders a number of about ten different profiles have been recognized. Each of this profiles and even each of the layers composing the profile is characterized: a) from the granulometrical point of view: the determination of the following fractions : 0-2-10-20-50-100-200-500-1000-2000 micron; b) from the chemical point of view: study of the variations with depth of the CaCO 3 - content, of the acidity and of the organic matter content; c) From the physico-chemical point of view: determination of the adsorption capacity; d) from the mineralogical point of view: determination of heavy minerals, feldspars and micas contents. These results are the outcome of the complete study of about 120 profiles (700 soil-samples), spread over a region covering approximately 5.000 ha.
