International audience ; The crisis of the papacy's temporal power in the 1860s led to a vast mobilisation of Catholics in Europe. This article examines the form that this mobilisation took in one of the countries where it was strongest: Belgium. Dominated by lay people, the Belgian movement took advantage of the freedoms guaranteed by the country's constitution to build a solid organisation.
