Over planten en hun naam: wetenschappelijke namen, volksnamen, Nederlandstalige namen

On plants and their names: scientific names, popular names, Dutch names. – Many naturalists prefer vernacular names rather than scientific names which are often perceived as difficult or pedantic. This contribution provides a historical overview of the evolution of the use of Dutch plant names in the Belgian and Dutch floras, with special attention to attempts to harmonize the names across national borders. The complementarity of the two systems of naming (Dutch versus ‘Latin’) when used by various user groups, ranging from scientists to recreational florists, is also discussed.
