The impact of car sharing on vehicle ownership and travel behaviour: results from a wide scale research amongst Belgian car sharing users

Despite the fact that car sharing has been around for a while, the sector has changed rapidly in recent years due to digitization and other innovative solutions. New concepts like free floating car sharing arose, which does not make it always easy for policy makers to distinguish the different systems from each other. Despite the fact that car sharing has been around for a while, the sector has changed rapidly in recent years due to digitization and other innovative solutions. New concepts like free floating car sharing arose, which does not make it always easy for policy makers to distinguish the different systems from each other. However, every type of car sharing has its own target group and impact, which makes many systems complementary to each other. To measure the impact of car sharing in Flanders, the largest region in Belgium, Autodelen.net created a questionnaire, in close cooperation with its advisory board consisting of the Flemish car sharing operators. The questionnaire was completed by 6.300 car sharing users and is used as the basis for a wide scale research which reflects the impact in terms of: Impact on modal split and modal shift Impact on car ownership Replacement rate of a shared car Differences between cities and rural areas Average target audience of car sharing The final report, which will be presented by end of February 2023, will focus on the impact of car sharing in general as well as the impact of the different operational forms of car sharing (roundtrip, free floating and peer-to-peer). This subdivision is based on the STARS H2020-project. During the presentation at the conference, we will reflect on the following aspects: Current market situation in Flanders, Belgium Methodology: what steps were taken? Findings: impact of car sharing in general and the different operational forms Lessons learned: what can (local) policy makers learn from this research? During the presentation we will also highlight the differences between cities and rural areas in terms of impact since this is part of the Interreg North-West Europe eHUBS capitalisation project.
