This thesis shows that the way in which the history of urbanism is elaborated makes it possible neither to know the past of current “diffuse city” nor to suppose the existence of any “diffuse city” in the past ; it intends then to contribute to a history of urbanization in the broad sense of the word by producing new sources (vol. 3), which are not the archives of urbanism (vol. 2). After analysing the way in which these territories “neither rural norurban” are apprehended today (chap.1), a physical field is studied in particular : the Belgian Brabant, on four different scales (chap.2 -5). The study leads to a period of important urbanization (1885-1914) but never studied physically because it was not planned : original maps of it have been produced here. The comparison with the current “diffuse city” makes it possible to reconsider this phase of urbanization in Belgian historiography but also to criticize the idea of urban dispersion as the final phase of an urban growth process. ; Ce travail pose l'hypothèse que la manière dont l'histoire de l'urbanisme est élaborée ne permet ni de connaître le passé des actuelles “villes diffuses” ni de supposer l'existence de “villes diffuses” dans le passé. Il propose dès lors de contribuer à une histoire de l'urbanisation au sens large, en produisant de nouvelles sources (vol. 3) qui ne soient pas celles des archives de l'urbanisme (vol. 2). Après une analyse de la manière dont ces territoires “ni ruraux ni urbains” sont aujourd'hui appréhendés (chap 1), un terrain est étudié en particulier : le Brabant belge, à 4 échelles différentes (chap 2 à 5). L'étude aboutit sur une période d'urbanisation importante (1885-1914) mais jamais étudiée physiquement parce que non planifiée, et en produit des cartes inédites. La comparaison avec la “ville diffuse” actuelle permet de revenir sur cette urbanisation dans l'historiographie belge mais aussi de relativiser l'idée de la dispersion comme phase finale de la croissance des villes.
