Abstract: This study seeks to provide insight into the complexity of migration decisions related to gradual environmental changes and highlights the importance of analyzing local contexts and cultures when studying environmental change-related migration patterns. To achieve this, semi-structured interviews were conducted in Belgium and Morocco, supplemented by observations. The research is divided into two components. The first component examines retrospectively the migration trajectories of Moroccan and Congolese migrants living in Belgium. The second component analyzes the perceptions of individuals living in rural areas of the Souss-Massa region in Morocco, focusing on the impact of slow-moving environmental changes on migration decisions. The study considers various factors such as household characteristics, migration cultures, religious beliefs, gender relations, and life course, to determine their role in migration decisions.
