Isso ocorreu devido a acontecimentos que marcaram essa década, no caso, a carestia e a afirmação de novos valores, como, por exemplo a crescente consolidação e propagação do individualismo social e o self-made man, além disso, ainda houve o escândalo político provocado pelo caso de Watergate, que culminou na renúncia do presidente Richard Nixon. O alto índice de inflação e o desemprego provocaram um mal-estar entre a população americana, fazendo com que a desesperança tomasse conta do ambiente social.
