The use of medicinal plants for the treatment of health conditions in primary care has become a treatment strategy by national health systems in different countries of the world, because its effectiveness has been demonstrated with sufficient scientific evidence for an important group of pathologies. The use of phytotherapeutic medicines is even a strategy in developed countries, as it has been demonstrated that products derived from plants are safe, efficient and effective. This work exposes the experience obtained in health education carried out by nursing students in the Sabanilla community, Daule canton, Guayaquil. Ecuador. The population of the community, which is made up of 406 inhabitants, and a sample of 365, was taken into consideration. The selection of the sample was carried out by intentional non-probabilistic sampling. The medicinal plants with the greatest history of consumption in the community were chamomile, oregano, lemon verbena and aloe vera. The parts of the plants with therapeutic properties were the flowers and the leaves and for the aloe vera the gel extracted from the leaves and the most appropriate pharmaceutical forms were infusions and decoctions. The use of dry plants is preferred before fresh ones in quantities between 5 and 10%, while the fresh gel is used for Aloe Vera L. ; El uso de plantas medicinales para el tratamiento de las afecciones de salud en la atención primaria se ha convertido en una estrategia de tratamiento por los sistemas nacionales de salud en diferentes países del mundo, debido a que se ha demostrado con suficiente evidencia científica su efectividad para un grupo importante de patologías. El uso de medicamentos fitoterapéuticos constituye incluso una estrategia en países desarrollados, al ser demostrado que los productos derivados de las plantas son seguros, eficientes y eficaces.
