SUMMARY: After a discussion of the various historical and textual transformations of both single recipes as well as of larger collections, a brief sketch is given of the reception of ancient pharmaceutical knowledge in medieval Europe, in particular at the medical school of Salerno during the twelfth century. The influence of Salerno can be traced in the development of German vernacular collections of medicinal recipes. Also Middle Dutch medical texts were deeply influenced by the Salernitan treatises.
