Although the contextualist approach of TIN20 has produced an interesting perspective on the interaction of technological innovation and the organization of society, the claims made by the editors of TIN2a have only been partially realized. What is still missing is a thorough analysis of the way the spirit of technology, characterized by pragmatism, invention and rational decision making, has pervaded modern patterns of living, behaviour, norms and values. Furthermore, it is argued that in focusing on the social and cultural aspects of technology, the role of science and engineering is disappearing from view. A broadening of the history of technology towards economic, social en cultural history, as presented by TIN20, should be accompanied by a parallel reflection on the nature of innovation and scientific inquiry.
