Men's house (mau) in Tobati village, Yotefa Bay

European navigators began traveling to the coastal areas of New Guinea in the 16th century, but it was not until 1858 that the Dutch Etna Expedition reached Humboldt Bay and Lake Sentani island (situated on the north coast of the island in the present-day Indonesian province of Papua). C.B.H. von Rosenberg was the draftsman of the Etna Expedition, and this drawing from that trip was published in H.D.A. van der Goes, "Nieuw Guinea, ethnographisch en natuurkundig onderzocht en beschreven in 1858 door een Nederlandsch Indische Commissie.," (Amsterdam, 1862).
