Emphasizing the leading role of Amsterdam and Nijmegen Universities, the article summarizes the main stages and points out the major protagonists of the process of academic institutionalization of communication studies in the Netherlands since the 1970s. At first it reports the contribution of older researchers (Stappers, Brouwer and van der Ban) in the transition that academically represented the growing interest in specializing the study of the subject at that time. In a second moment, it highlights the local role permormed by the British researcher Denis McQuail, responsible for the international projection of the new field of studies, occurred during the 1980s. In conclusion, the article presents a quick overview of the most recent institutional situation and its main lines of research. ; Destacando el protagonismo de las Universidades de Amsterdam y Nijmegen, el artículo resume las principales etapas y señala a los mayores protagonistas del proceso de institucionalización académica de los estudios de comunicación en los Países Bajos a partir de los años 1970. De inicio se centra en las contribuciones de investigadores más antiguos, Sttapers, Brouwer y van der Ban, para examinar su participación en la transición que, en aquella época, representó académicamente el surgimiento del interés en especializar la área. Después, se pone en el centro el papel desempeñado en el país por el investigador británico Denis McQuail, responsable por la proyección internacional del nuevo campo de estudios, ocurrida durante los años 1980. Concluyendo, el artículo presenta un rápido panorama de la situación institucional más reciente y sus principales líneas de búsqueda.
