Between 1671 and 1673, while the Netherlands are threatened, then invaded by France, Johan De Witt, Leader of the United Provinces, and Johannes Hudde, burgomaster of Amsterdam, build a method for calculating life annuities, in order to resolve the Dutch State Finances crisis. Then, after De Witt’s assassination, the second makes paradoxically a rate for life annuities for which no one could find a link with this method.
