Indeed, it spans, for all practical purposes, only the last twenty years. It is not coincidental that it was just twenty years ago that Pope John XXIII convoked the first sess ion of the Second Vatican Council. To understand the growth of recent Dutch theology in the Roman Catholic Church, and the kind of impact that it came to have on Catholics in the United States, one must look to those ma rvelous three years of the council which, more than any other single fact, has changed the face of world Catholicism to what it is today.
