Golden opportunities - reality or myth? Horn of Africa female migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in The Netherlands

This article explores programmes for female refugees and asylum seekers (RAS) from the Horn of Africa living in The Netherlands with special emphasis on female refugees and asylum seekers from Sudan. It is based on a survey carried out in 2003 amongst Sudanese female RAS with the aim of identifying opportunities for capacity-building. Data were collected through group discussions and interviews with female migrants from Ethiopia, Somalia and the Sudan. Semi-structured questionnaires to both migrant organizations, NGOs working for RAS and those involved in training programmes were used.
