This chapter examines how far-right parties from various European countries (Belgium: Vlaams Belang; Denmark: Dansk Folkeparti; Germany: AfD and NPD; France: Front National; Netherlands: PVV; Sweden: Sverigedemokraterna) make use of what is communicated only implicitly in their political programs (2010-2017) in order to present themselves as normal, moderate parties without abandoning the far-right core of their ideology, which actually is essential for their traditional electorate. The chapter also examines which values and messages are conveyed by what remains merely unsaid in these programs. To this end, two main strategies are examined: a) strategies which focus on the analysis of the countries’ social and political reality (defined by presuppositions which remain implicit) and b) strategies which focus on what implicitly may be understood. As a result, it is shown that these strategies contribute to a resemantization of key concepts of democratic societies like democracy or liberty of speech. This process is likely to endanger our society’s democratic consensus.
