Quand les footballeuses sont des footballeurs : étude comparative de la dénomination des professionnelles de foot en français et en néerlandais

Based on an empirical corpus study of sports press, this chapter compares the humannouns used by Dutch-speaking Belgian and French journalists to refer to femaleprofessional soccer players. From a quantitative point of view, it shows that the use ofmasculine nouns is globally low, albeit more frequent in Dutch than in French. Thephonetic, morphological, semantic and discourse-pragmatic analysis of the nouns reveals that the use of masculine nouns depends on qualitative criteria that are different in either language.
