This thesis describes for the first time the theological reception of Comrie’s doctrine of justification in the reformed tradition in the Netherlands at the end of the nineteenth and during the twentieth century. It turns out that Comrie has mainly influenced reformed orthodoxy and experimental reformed circles, both in the Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk and in churches of the Afscheiding. In the specified period, many reformed theologians responded to Comrie. The reactions vary from (partial) acceptance to (partial) rejection. Among those who accept Comrie’s theology were those who adopted his views unchanged or modified his views. Comrie formulated justification (1761) as a whole consisting of four essential parts: the justification from eternity, the justification in the resurrection of Christ, the imputation of Christ’s righteousness in time, and the justification by faith. In the Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland, the Comrie reception was strongly determined by A. Kuyper. He unleashed a Comrie revival by publishing on Comrie’s doctrine of justification. With this he provoked a whole discussion about the justification of eternity. In his theology he adopted Comrie’s view of the justification of eternity in a modified way. Contrary to Comrie, Kuyper did not emphasize that this was an internal act in God that did nothing outside of God. In Kuyper’s view, the elect were born justified and in time they became aware of their eternal justification. Characteristic for Kuyper’s doctrine of justification is that he spoke of a phased justification that took place in different stages. One of the stages that Kuyper taught was an unconscious vivification or rebirth. Kuyper’s insights did not go uncontested and led to a long discussion in the Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland. Ultimately, at the Synod of 1905, a peace formula recognized both the eternity aspect of justification and the justification in time. After Berkouwer paid some attention to Comrie’s doctrine of justification (1949), the attention for Comrie disappeared ...
