If one were to ask American Christians about their image of church life in The Netherlands, various answers would emerge. Some would cite the image of a radical Roman Catholic Church, now at odds with Rome. Others would mention the figures of Visser 't Hooft, Schillebeeckx, Berkhof, or Berkouwer as theologians and churchmen of international reknown. Christians with a different orientation might refer to Corrie ten Boom and Brother Andrew. Certainly all these figures and movements constitute part of the kaleidoscope of Dutch church life. The church movement I wish to explore in this essay is, I believe, not known sufficiently. The evangelical movement in The Netherlands is relatively recent, gaining momentum especially since 1960. It is a complex movement of many intertwined church and para-church organizations, sometimes contributing to the established churches, sometimes competing with them. This evangelical movement is worth knowing, however, since it is a vibrant and expanding movement which is often seen as an alternative to the established denominations.
