In this article I firstly reconstruct the main theses of the first chapter of the second part of The Origins of Totalitarianism: “The political emancipation of the bourgeoisie”. Arendt argues here that imperialism at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries was the consequence of two conflicting logics: that of the geographically bounded nation-state, and that of the unlimited expansion of the capitalist economy.
