The history of the seminary

Western Theological Seminary, now one hundred years of age, began her life as the theological department of Hope College. The year was 1866. Seven members of the senior class of the college, desiring to make further preparation for the gospel ministry, and wanting very much to do so here in Holland, petitioned the general synod of the Reformed Church in America to take such steps as would be necessary for the realization of their ambition. The Minutes of General Synod of June, 1866 take note of the petition:
